Begin with the life, a painting, or the argument.

For the life in sequence, begin with Tiger and follow the family, artistic, and intellectual history in Chapters 3–17; Chapters 21–28 continue through war and its aftermath. For the scholarly reversal, read “The Problem This Book Addresses” and Chapter 18, “Another Person’s Judgment.” “The Price of Time” follows the money behind a painting’s sale. Chapters 19 and 20 examine the assumptions used to connect the letters; the opening guide offers full and shorter routes through them. Both editions include a linked glossary and the attached version 4.14 computational companion.

Reading guide ↗Explanations & evidence ↗

From the question to the evidence.

The one-page Preface introduces Sive’s encounter with Marc’s work. “Questions behind this biography,” after the Coda, connects the book to her work in history, social science, and fiction. The methods essay then sets out how the historical argument was tested, which sources were examined, and which comparisons remain open. Read them together to see how the biography’s ambitions become claims a reader can assess.
